Looking for a great DIY Foundation or DIY Bronzer? Making your own powdered diy foundation and bronzer is pretty simple…and inexpensive.
Buying toxic free products for your home can be a real hassle and sometimes it is super hard to even know what is safe to use. This applies to personal care products and cleaners. Toxic free makeup is one thing I’ve found to be especially difficult to find within my budget. One option is homemade products. Sometimes these can be more affordable than what you are currently using.
“Toxic Free” by Robin Konie offers a variety of DIY care products and cleaners to cover most your needs.
I recently used one recipe to make some bronzer:
- 1 TBS cinnamon powder
- 1 tsp cocoa powder
- 1 tsp nutmeg powder
- 2 tsp cornstarch
- 15 drops of lavender or rosemary essential oil.
I then adjusted the cornstarch a little to get the exact color I wanted.
For anything you make you will want to adjust it to specifically match your coloring.
I then altered this recipe for a foundation. I have fairly light skin so I adjusted the recipe as follows.
- ½ Tbs cinnamon powder
- ½ tsp cocoa powder
- ½ tsp nutmeg powder
- 4 tsp cornstarch
- 15 drops of lavender or rosemary essential oil.
- Adjust it according to your skin tone.

Is it supposed to be loose powder?
Megan says
Yes. It is a loose powder. If you want it to be a compact powder you would just add coconut oil or more essential oils.

Can you make this without the essential oils?
Megan says
Yeah. you’ll smell the cocoa more though.

wondering if you know, is cornstarch safe for skin? I know most mattifying/translucent powders use it. does it clog pores?
Tiffany says
I’ve heard that cornstarch can breed bacteria when wet and cause acne,, however, I have also heard people say it is awesome and that they have never had a problem. As for my personal opinion I would use arrowroot powder in place of the cornstarch. Most corn is genetically modified and I prefer to stay away from that when possible. 🙂

I was just wondering what the essential oils do for it? Are they just for the scent or something? Those two are two that I don’t have yet and have to wait til next paycheck to buy 🙁
Megan says
It would be fine without the essential oils. They are great for scent and also provide some benefits to the skin but it would still be great without them.

Hi, i was wondering if the foundation powder is suited for a lighter skin tone or a darker skin tone.
Thanks, Ruby 🙂
Megan says
I would say for a medium skin tone. You can adjust that by adding more or less of the cocoa to match your skin tone.
