Flu season is here are you ready? Ironically flu season generally starts with Halloween and goes right on till Christmas. Ever wonder why…maybe it’s cause we go out eat a ton of candy for Halloween then keep it around while nibbling on a few pieces here and there. As far as sugary treats go Halloween candy blends into candied yams, fruit cakes, and the yummy pies of thanksgiving…which blends into candy canes, chocolates, and all the yummy desserts you are making for your neighbors and they’re making for you for Christmas. It’s no wonder with all this sugar for three straight months that our immune system would suffer. Not to mention we are traveling, staying up late, and just cramming a bunch of extra things into our schedule. Between all the fun we are having we are also adding extra stress to our poor immune system. So how do we prepare for all this?
Natural ways of Preventing the Flu
Building your immunity with Food and supplements
Eat lots of bone broth: in soups with added veggies, gravy’s, sauces…however you can get it. Bone broth contains many nutrients, and it helps heal the gut. In turn boosting immune function. You can also get it by taking gelatin (Find it here).
Drink raw milk from grassfed cows. Eat yogurts or kefir made from raw milk. This is so beneficial because raw milk is very nourishing and helps boost immune function.
Eat eggs from pastured chickens. The closer to raw the better. They are full of vitamin A and D.
Eat fermented foods like yogurt, fermented veggies, or kefir. These foods have the good bacteria in them that will be needed to fight off infection.
Include coconut oil in your diet (See more here.). Coconut oil has strong antiviral and antibacterial properties. There are so many yummy recipes with coconut oil in it. If you can’t find one you like, try just adding it to some hot cocoa or in your tea.
Garlic is also a great food to include. It has antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal functions as well. You can take supplements or add it to your food. It is more effective if taken raw (hummus is a good way to eat it raw).
Keep yourself hyrdrated with nutrient dense liquids such as bone broth and tea. Especially if you have a fever, the liquid will help bring it down.
Avoid the sugar and starch.
Fermented cod liver oil: Though you should be taking cod liver oil on a daily basis anyway you can double the dose for sickness. It has lots of vitamin A and D. This is a great natural supplement because this is a food source, your body will only absorb the amount of nutrients that it needs. Find FCLO See more here..
Vitamin C: Everyone knows to knows vitamin C is what keeps you from getting sick right. A study done in the journal of manipulative and physiological theraputics says to take 1000 mg of vitamin c every hour for 6 hours and then 1000 mg of vitamin C three times daily after that. This can relieve flu symptoms and prevent them as well. Find vitamin C See more here..
Take a warm See more here. bath. This helps to relax muscles and relieve chills. It is also detoxifying.
Get enough sleep. When we don’ get enough sleep our immune system suffers.
If you have clogged sinuses, naturally open them with steam. Take a hot shower or boil some hot water, cover your head with a towel and inhale the steam. you can add herbs or essential oils to the pot as well.
And just try to take care of yourself. Getting enough sleep, abstaining from sugar, and getting in some good exercise will help maintain a healthy immune system.
