Meet Charlie. He was kicked out of the city, and given to us since his crow was disturbing the peace in a nearby small town. I have never met such a friendly rooster. The girls love him.
Megan doesn’t get a lot of opportunities to help in the garden. She had to move 5 hours away for work, making it difficult to help out. I had to capture this rare moment in action.
Want to know how to get rid of grasshoppers? Get chickens, lots of chickens.
Our meat chickens are growing fast. Soon they will be full size and ready for the freezer.
Our ducks are getting so BIG! And the drakes are finally starting to show off. It has been impossible to tell the females from the males until just recently.
I still think the turkeys look scrawny and ugly. But maybe one of these days they will catch up with all the other birds.
When we weed the garden, we feed the weeds to the birds. The ducks, especially, love eating the morning glory.
So, is it worth it? Yes, for us it is. We get the great opportunity to teach our children about food, animals, and work. Those things have a value I can’t put a price on. We get the joy of stocked pantries and fruit rooms. We get the pleasure of enjoying fresh produce and that indescribable sense of accomplishment as we prepare and eat it. We get quality, organic produce and meat. We know how the food was raised and how it was processed. Totally worth it!
Am I looking forward to next year? Yes, this year has been hard. There has been a lot of work that won’t be required next year. We won’t have to plant berries, lay sod, install sprinklers, or build tomato houses. And I won’t be pregnant. We will see if being pregnant or having a baby is harder, but I’m guessing the pregnancy.
And now it is time for me to wrap it up. I have beans to pick and snap, pickles to make, zucchini to freeze, and apricots to dehydrate.
